July » Chasing Ultra-Prominence Peaks

Maybe my last major mountain project for a while, I’ve decided to go for all the ultra-prominence peaks in the lower 48. There are 57 “ultras” (5000ft+ of prominence) in the contiguous USA. I had about 28 done when I came across the concept last fall and I’m hoping to get most of the rest done this summer. I’m also chasing the most isolated (distance to the next higher mountain) peaks in the USA, there are 39 that have more than 100 miles of isolation. Pictures below are from:

Steen Mountains, OR (124mi of isolation). Beautiful overlooked mountain in very SE Oregon, w/Christina Lam

She Devil, ID (5200′ of prominence) plus The Goblin as a bonus peak.  Ultra #43/57, w/Christina Lam (backpacked to camp)

McDonald Peak, MT (5640′ of prominence). Rugged peak in a grizzly sanctuary.  Ultra #44/57, w/Tony Russo

Abercrombie Peak, WA (5168′ of prominence). Easy forest walk on trail. Ultra #45/57.
