2012: December 22 » Amtrak Century (road bike ride)

Something I wanted to “check off the list”, I pedaled a borrowed road bike from my Mom’s doorstep in Placentia to my house in San Diego. Clicking off 101 miles, I followed what is commonly known as the “Amtrak Century”, a mostly coastal route running through San Juan Capistrano, Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, etc…

The day started off by passing an accident scene – a fellow roadbiker unconscious in the street on Tustin Ave after being struck by a car. I was yelled at by concerned officers on scene for not having enough lights on my bike – warning me not to end up like him. Trying not to think about it, I enjoyed a beautiful day and ocean views for much of the ride, and struggled big time to finish out the last 20 miles. The ride was tougher than I expected, though that’s probably what hooked me – road-biking is something I could see myself getting into more seriously sometime down the road. “Double century” has a nice ring to it 🙂
