I traveled Serbia by bicycle as part of my eastern Europe cycling tour. I spent a few days in Belgrade and was impressed with the communist-era architecture and fun vibe, then cycled along the Danube River to Romania in 4-5 days. I mostly camped but one night I was the lone occupant in a hotel/restaurant that opened just for me when a ferry was canceled due to weather. I also did a homestay and had one of the best meals I’ve ever had. I hiked Veliki Strbac, a remote summit overlooking the Danube river, which I later found was closed to people without a guide – I wonder if I’m the only westerner to reach this peak. A bear came into my camp that same night, one of my sketchiest bear encounters I’ve had. Serbia was tough travel but one of my most memorable adventures…
