Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is where I started my Asia cycling tour, flying in to Samarkand with friend Christian Mulkey. The historical sights in Uzbekistan are incredible, with the Registan being one of my favorite man-made creations of all time. The people were incredibly hospitable, many times gifting us food and inviting us to visit. Christian and I cycled to Tashkent, took a train to Andijon, and cycled to Kyrgyzstan from there.

Update – I visited Uzbekistan a 2nd time as part of another trip to Central Asia, this time with friend Jacob Kallman. We crossed on foot from Turkmenistan and visited the Aral Sea, Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand. I also hiked an obscure prominent peak, Gora Takhku, a highlight of my trip. Uzbekistan should be at the top of any travelers list – friendly, safe, cheap, great food, rich history, and a photographer’s dream. Top shelf destination.
