These few days were based around ticking off more desert peaks from the DPS list. I first hiked Old Dad Mountain in Mojave, then spent 2 days backpacking New York Butte in the Inyo Mountains. Old Dad was quite an enjoyable scramble, and a quick side trip nearby brought me to check out a cool lava tube in Mojave National Preserve. The views hiking to NY Butte were amazing – Saline Valley to the east, and Owens Valley and the Sierra to the west. Even more interesting was the old salt tram – a tram built in the early 1900s that was used to haul salt from Saline Valley to Owens Valley. There is nothing in the world like this old tram, very cool! Just one more peak to go to finish the list!
