Anna and I had turned back in bad weather on Arizona’s highest point in November of 2009, just two-thirds of a mile and 600 vertical feet from the 12800 foot stratovolcano’s summit. The summit ridge and the overall dominance of the mountain over its surroundings had initially attacted me to this peak, and we made a second attempt on New Year’s Day 2010. We fought through deep snow on steep slopes before we were rewarded with perfect conditions on the summit ridge, calm weather, and a deserted mountain-top.
